Trump Administration Federal Funding Freeze Puts Jobs, Public Health, and Worker Safety at Risk

January 28, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C.  The Trump administration ordered a freeze on all federal grant and loan payments late last night, except for funding paid directly to individuals. An announcement of the pause was released from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) late in the evening.

The sweeping interruption to funding includes payouts from the Inflation Reduction Act, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and the CHIPS and Science Act. These landmark laws invest trillions of dollars in domestic manufacturing, infrastructure improvements, clean energy, climate resiliency measures, and more. Many of these critical investments were already flowing to domestic manufacturing facilities and clean energy projects in development.

Following the OMB announcement, the BlueGreen Alliance released a statement from Executive Director Jason Walsh:

“The Trump administration pitched the whole country into confusion with this ill-timed and blatantly unconstitutional pause on funds. Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and the CHIPS and Science Act, U.S. manufacturers were confidently growing their domestic footprint. On the promise of these federal funds, they broke ground on facilities across the nation, already employing construction workers and preparing to put local workers in good union jobs. All of those jobs could be at risk thanks to Trump’s late-night order.

“This doesn’t just impact new funding programs, but longstanding pools of federal funding that support lead service line replacement, energy assistance for low-income Americans, and other programs critical to public health and welfare. This attack will no doubt be challenged, but the message behind it should never be forgotten: the Trump administration does not care about American workers and their communities.”
