Building Clean: Improving Efficiency, Health, and Equity in Housing and Creating Good Jobs

When buildings are designed, built, and maintained to protect the health of people and the environment—and if the manufacturing of building products and materials create good-paying union jobs in the U.S.—then the wellbeing of people and communities will improve, especially for people of color. Building Clean works to increase the use of building products that are more efficient, less toxic, and manufactured in the U.S. We aim to improve the physical, environmental, and economic health of communities and promote a more equitable future for all.

Solidarity for Climate Action: The Plan We Need to Get American Manufacturing Back on Track

Manufacturing towns dot the nation, and advanced manufacturing helps provide the foundation for the economy in major regions of the United States. Industries like the steel and automotive industries supported good-paying jobs, middle-class families, and prosperous communities for decades, while also spurring American leadership in innovation and technology. That’s still true in some areas. But in many others, factories have closed or new industries offer jobs that all too often are poorly paid, insecure, or unsafe.

BlueGreen Alliance Stands in Solidarity with UAW workers 

Union contracts for nearly 150,000 United Auto Workers (UAW) members at Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis expired on Thursday, September 14 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Those workers are now on strike or working without a contract. UAW is pushing for, among other items, fair and equal pay, safer workplaces—particularly in electric vehicle (EV) battery plants—and job security in the transition to EVs.

Administration Demonstrates Commitment to Pro-Worker Auto Industry in New Announcement

The Biden administration today announced new and updated funding opportunities aimed at supporting a domestic supply chain for the clean vehicles of the future and ensuring that the jobs building these vehicles provide community-sustaining wages and benefits in workplaces where workers have the free and fair choice to join a union. The package of announcements focuses on three U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) programs that provide grants and loans to automakers building clean vehicles and their components here in the United States, the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (ATVM) Loan Program, the Battery Material Processing and Battery Manufacturing and Recycling Grants Programs, and the new Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grant Program.

The BlueGreen Alliance Joins Letter to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Urging the Adoption of Stronger and More Comprehensive Lead and Copper Rules

We urge the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to immediately propose Lead and Copper Rule Improvements (LCRI) that comprehensively address roadblocks in finishing the job. While the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the American Rescue Plan created funding to replace lead service lines, the states hardest-hit by this public health emergency need additional support and clear requirements to ensure appropriate corrosion control treatment to address lead-containing premise pluming and the complete removal of all lead pipes from their communities within 10 years.

Today the BlueGreen Alliance released a new visualization of hard-hit areas across the United States that stand to benefit from the investments in the Inflation Reduction Act, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), and CHIPS and Science Act. The map highlights communities impacted by the decline of domestic industrial manufacturing, the energy transition, and disproportionate environmental, economic, and health burdens.
