When buildings are designed, built, and maintained to protect the health of people and the environment—and if the manufacturing of building products and materials create good-paying union jobs in the U.S.—then the wellbeing of people and communities will improve, especially for people of color. Building Clean works to increase the use of building products that are more efficient, less toxic, and manufactured in the U.S. We aim to improve the physical, environmental, and economic health of communities and promote a more equitable future for all.

Manufacturing towns dot the nation, and advanced manufacturing helps provide the foundation for the economy in major regions of the United States. Industries like the steel and automotive industries supported good-paying jobs, middle-class families, and prosperous communities for decades, while also spurring American leadership in innovation and technology. That’s still true in some areas. But in many others, factories have closed or new industries offer jobs that all too often are poorly paid, insecure, or unsafe.

BlueGreen Alliance Applauds Workers’ Wins as UAW Announces Ratification of Historic Contracts

The United Auto Workers (UAW) today announced the ratification of contracts with the Big Three automakers—General Motors (GM), Ford, and Stellantis. The contracts dramatically increase wages, end the tier systems, lay the groundwork to bring many of the automakers’ electric vehicle (EV) and battery facilities under the UAW’s master contracts, and much more. In response to the successful ratification of the contracts, the BlueGreen Alliance released a statement from Executive Director Jason Walsh.

Trump’s Detroit Trip is a Clear Display of Disrespect for Striking Workers

BlueGreen Alliance Stands in Solidarity with UAW workers 

Union contracts for nearly 150,000 United Auto Workers (UAW) members at Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis expired on Thursday, September 14 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Those workers are now on strike or working without a contract. UAW is pushing for, among other items, fair and equal pay, safer workplaces—particularly in electric vehicle (EV) battery plants—and job security in the transition to EVs.

BlueGreen Alliance Celebrates Pro-Worker Votes in MI Senate

The Michigan State Senate yesterday passed two measures to make it easier for workers to unionize and ensure that workers on state projects are paid a fair wage. The first measure overturns the state’s “right-to-work” law, which hinders the ability of workers to unionize. The second measure reinstates prevailing wage requirements for construction workers on state-funded projects.
