Building Clean: Improving Efficiency, Health, and Equity in Housing and Creating Good Jobs

When buildings are designed, built, and maintained to protect the health of people and the environment—and if the manufacturing of building products and materials create good-paying union jobs in the U.S.—then the wellbeing of people and communities will improve, especially for people of color. Building Clean works to increase the use of building products that are more efficient, less toxic, and manufactured in the U.S. We aim to improve the physical, environmental, and economic health of communities and promote a more equitable future for all.

Solidarity for Climate Action: The Plan We Need to Get American Manufacturing Back on Track

Manufacturing towns dot the nation, and advanced manufacturing helps provide the foundation for the economy in major regions of the United States. Industries like the steel and automotive industries supported good-paying jobs, middle-class families, and prosperous communities for decades, while also spurring American leadership in innovation and technology. That’s still true in some areas. But in many others, factories have closed or new industries offer jobs that all too often are poorly paid, insecure, or unsafe.

Clean Manufacturing Leadership Act Will Transform Washington’s Industrial Sector

The Washington State Legislature delivered the Washington Clean Manufacturing Leadership Act (2SSB 5269) to Governor Inslee’s desk, where it awaits his signature. 2SSB 5269 creates a statewide industrial strategy to strengthen Washington’s existing manufacturing base. The bill harnesses the more than $50 billion in industrial transformation investments in the Inflation Reduction Act to build a robust, low-carbon manufacturing economy in Washington State.

EPA Proposes Robust Vehicle Emissions Standards, Accelerating the Nation Towards Climate Goals

This morning, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed new light- and heavy-duty vehicle greenhouse gas and tailpipe emissions standards that chart a course toward significantly reduced emissions from the nation’s future vehicle fleets. The new standards, which apply to vehicles beginning with Model Year 2027, represent one part of the broader whole-of-government approach the administration is taking to reduce emissions from the transportation sector and meet climate goals. It is essential, however, that the standards also contribute to the protection and creation of high-quality, union jobs in the auto manufacturing sector.

Maryland Passes the POWER Act to Expand Offshore Wind, Good Jobs

 Today the Maryland General Assembly passed the Promoting Offshore Wind Energy Resources (POWER) Act. This legislation increases Maryland’s offshore wind (OSW) goals to 8.5 gigawatts by 2031 and establishes high-road labor standards across OSW manufacturing, construction, operations, and maintenance through the requirement for Project Labor Agreements (PLAs) and Labor Peace Agreements (LPAs). The POWER Act also initiates a state process to coordinate transmission infrastructure and prioritize in-state manufacturing.

The Michigan State Senate yesterday passed two measures to make it easier for workers to unionize and ensure that workers on state projects are paid a fair wage. The first measure overturns the state’s “right-to-work” law, which hinders the ability of workers to unionize. The second measure reinstates prevailing wage requirements for construction workers on state-funded projects.
