BlueGreen Alliance Statement on Passage of Families First Coronavirus Response Act
The Senate today passed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act to provide aid to American workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following passage of the bill in the Senate, the BlueGreen Alliance released a statement from Executive Director Jason Walsh:
“We thank Congress for voting to provide critical relief—in particular paid leave for some workers and bolstering unemployment insurance—during this crisis.
“This is a necessary initial step, but Congress must do more to stand with workers and families to protect their health and livelihoods in this moment of crisis and also to safeguard their futures and get our economy back on track. Now is the time to advance a comprehensive stimulus package that lays the foundation for a sustained recovery through investments in key economic sectors and in good-paying jobs that will support workers and help fill the hole in demand left by this pandemic’s economic fallout.
“Our nation will likely lose millions of jobs by this summer. Congress needs to respond to that reality in the next stage of stimulus legislation being debated right now. They can do that by investing in repairing and modernizing our infrastructure systems; retooling our manufacturing sector; and shoring up our public sector and public services that are the first line of defense against this and future crises.”
