Russell Vought’s Confirmation is a Disaster for Workers and the Environment
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Senate confirmed Russell Vought as the director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) yesterday.
While he was still the unconfirmed OMB nominee, Vought orchestrated a sweeping freeze on federal grant and loan payments. This funding freeze halted investments authorized by Congress, such as the Inflation Reduction Act, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and the CHIPS and Science Act. The pause also impacted public service programs that the country depends on.
Vought served as acting director of OMB during some of Donald Trump’s first presidential term and was a primary author of Project 2025, a policy framework developed by conservative megadonors and former Trump administration officials that encourages the administration to dismantle critical public services and federal programs, step on labor rights for civil servants, and more.
Following the vote, the BlueGreen Alliance released a statement from Executive Director Jason Walsh:
“Russell Vought’s record proves he is unfit to serve as the director of OMB. With no authority, he launched an unconstitutional federal funding freeze that is a precursor to an even more radical power grab. Vought is an extremist whose values are incompatible with the values of America. While we are disappointed in the Senate’s vote, we continue to be an ally for the American working people, who want good, safe jobs and clean air and water, not Project 2025’s nonsense. The fight continues.”
