Ratification of Kigali Amendment Marks Significant Step in Fight Against Climate Change
The U.S. Senate yesterday voted to ratify the Kigali Amendment Montreal Protocol. The amendment phases down production of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)—powerful climate pollutants and is expected to avoid up to 0.5℃ of warming by 2100.
In response to the ratification, the BlueGreen Alliance released the following statement from Executive Director Jason Walsh:
“The ratification of this amendment represents a significant step forward in the fight to limit the damaging effects of climate change. In addition to its climate benefits, the Kigali Amendment will enable U.S. companies to access rapidly growing markets to bolster manufacturing jobs here in the United States, while decreasing climate emissions. This is a win for climate action, workers, and the economy.”
