Building Clean: Improving Efficiency, Health, and Equity in Housing and Creating Good Jobs

When buildings are designed, built, and maintained to protect the health of people and the environment—and if the manufacturing of building products and materials create good-paying union jobs in the U.S.—then the wellbeing of people and communities will improve, especially for people of color. Building Clean works to increase the use of building products that are more efficient, less toxic, and manufactured in the U.S. We aim to improve the physical, environmental, and economic health of communities and promote a more equitable future for all.

Solidarity for Climate Action: The Plan We Need to Get American Manufacturing Back on Track

Manufacturing towns dot the nation, and advanced manufacturing helps provide the foundation for the economy in major regions of the United States. Industries like the steel and automotive industries supported good-paying jobs, middle-class families, and prosperous communities for decades, while also spurring American leadership in innovation and technology. That’s still true in some areas. But in many others, factories have closed or new industries offer jobs that all too often are poorly paid, insecure, or unsafe.

BlueGreen Alliance Comments to DOE on Industrial Decarbonization

Decarbonization pathways can be an important step in securing the future of well-paid, U.S. manufacturing jobs in a net-zero economy—ensuring the longevity and competitiveness of some of the nation’s most important industries. With the right focus, this vision study can be a critical pathway through which DOE can detail how it intends to support domestic manufacturing growth and industrial decarbonization, while creating and preserving good union jobs, re-shoring clean technology supply chains, and delivering public health and environmental benefits to the workers and communities that need it most. EPA Advances Buy Clean with $160M for Emissions Reporting and Transparency

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded $160 million in grants to spur the production of environmental product declarations (EPDs). As a critical element of the Biden-Harris administration’s Federal Buy Clean Initiative and the Inflation Reduction Act, EPDs help provide transparency around the embodied emissions associated with the production of infrastructure materials such as steel, concrete, asphalt, and flat glass.

DOE Conversion Grants Lift Up Manufacturing Workers and Communities

The U.S. Department of Energy today announced the first ever award recipients of its Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grant Program. The Inflation Reduction Act-funded program is a first-of-its-kind effort to provide direct grants to recently closed or at-risk facilities and funds the retooling efforts needed to transform production lines that were building internal combustion engine vehicles and parts into production lines building electric vehicles (EVs) and parts.

 The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today announced a proposed rule designed to protect workers from extreme heat. Heat is the leading cause of death among all weather conditions in the United States. The proposed standard would ensure workers have water and shade breaks. It will apply to all employers conducting outdoor and indoor work in all general industry, construction, maritime, and agriculture sectors where OSHA has jurisdiction.
