Building Clean: Improving Efficiency, Health, and Equity in Housing and Creating Good Jobs

When buildings are designed, built, and maintained to protect the health of people and the environment—and if the manufacturing of building products and materials create good-paying union jobs in the U.S.—then the wellbeing of people and communities will improve, especially for people of color. Building Clean works to increase the use of building products that are more efficient, less toxic, and manufactured in the U.S. We aim to improve the physical, environmental, and economic health of communities and promote a more equitable future for all.

Solidarity for Climate Action: The Plan We Need to Get American Manufacturing Back on Track

Manufacturing towns dot the nation, and advanced manufacturing helps provide the foundation for the economy in major regions of the United States. Industries like the steel and automotive industries supported good-paying jobs, middle-class families, and prosperous communities for decades, while also spurring American leadership in innovation and technology. That’s still true in some areas. But in many others, factories have closed or new industries offer jobs that all too often are poorly paid, insecure, or unsafe.

New Research Finds Federal Clean Energy, Manufacturing, and Infrastructure Investments Will Support Three Million Jobs Per Year 

New analysis by the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst commissioned by the BlueGreen Alliance and National Skills Coalition estimates that the combined investments in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), Inflation Reduction Act, and CHIPS and Science Act (CHIPS) will support nearly 3 million jobs per year over the life span of the laws.

BlueGreen Alliance Stands in Solidarity with UAW workers 

Union contracts for nearly 150,000 United Auto Workers (UAW) members at Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis expired on Thursday, September 14 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Those workers are now on strike or working without a contract. UAW is pushing for, among other items, fair and equal pay, safer workplaces—particularly in electric vehicle (EV) battery plants—and job security in the transition to EVs.

Administration Demonstrates Commitment to Pro-Worker Auto Industry in New Announcement

The Biden administration today announced new and updated funding opportunities aimed at supporting a domestic supply chain for the clean vehicles of the future and ensuring that the jobs building these vehicles provide community-sustaining wages and benefits in workplaces where workers have the free and fair choice to join a union. The package of announcements focuses on three U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) programs that provide grants and loans to automakers building clean vehicles and their components here in the United States, the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (ATVM) Loan Program, the Battery Material Processing and Battery Manufacturing and Recycling Grants Programs, and the new Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grant Program.

BlueGreen Alliance Releases Survey on Federal Clean Energy, Clean Manufacturing Investments

The BlueGreen Alliance, a national partnership of labor unions and environmental organizations, has released new data highlighting the potential for clean energy, clean manufacturing, and infrastructure investments to resonate with noncollege educated people. According to the survey, an overwhelming 72% of noncollege educated people surveyed approve of significant federal investments in clean energy and clean manufacturing.

New Study of US EPA Methane Rule Highlights Jobs Potential of Plugging Methane Leaks in Oil and Gas Industry

A new study from the BlueGreen Alliance on economic impacts of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) supplemental methane rule released in November 2022 found the adoption of leak reducing technologies and practices at new, modified, and existing oil and gas facilities would create over 136,000 job-years through 2035. A job-year represents an increase in demand for employment sufficient to employ one person for a full year.

DOL, DOI, and EPA Work Together to Ensure Use of High-Road Labor Standards

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI), and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today signed memoranda of understanding (MOUs) pledging to work together to ensure the use of high-road labor standards on DOI and EPA funded projects.
