The offshore wind industry holds great potential for creating quality, family-sustaining jobs while producing clean, renewable energy. As more wind farms spring up off America’s coasts, demand for the highly skilled workers needed to complete these innovative projects will grow as well. Yesterday, Senate Democrats, led by Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Tom Carper (D-Del), and Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) introduced the International Climate Accountability Act, which would ensure the United States remains a party to the Paris Agreement and works to meet its commitments under the agreement. The bill is a companion to H.R. 9, which passed the House of Representative in early May.
Yesterday, Reps. Bill Keating (D-Md.), Joseph Kennedy III (D-Mass.), Alan Lowenthal (D-Cali.), Donald McEachin (D-Va.), and Donald Norcross (D-N.J.) reintroduced the Offshore Wind Jobs and Opportunity Act. The Clean Energy Jobs Act of 2019 is set to become law in Maryland on Friday after passing the General Assembly in April. The law sets a renewable energy target of 50 percent by 2030 and is expected to grow the state’s offshore wind capacity to over 1,500 megawatts by 2030.
Our partnership is firm in its belief that Americans don’t have to choose between a good job and a clean environment—we can and must have both. Investing in repairing and modernizing our nation’s infrastructure is a clear example of this principle. If done right, a federal infrastructure package will boost our economy and create millions of jobs, while simultaneously reducing pollution, combating climate change, and strengthening our communities.
The priorities are intended to help Congress craft a comprehensive package that will repair and modernize the nation’s infrastructure in a way that will support the creation of high-quality jobs, reduce the emissions driving climate change, and make our communities more resilient.
As a coalition of the nation’s largest labor unions and environmental groups, collectively representing millions of members and supporters, we write to urge you to swiftly move forward an ambitious plan to rebuild and transform America’s infrastructure. If done right, such a plan will boost our economy and create millions of jobs, while simultaneously reducing pollution, combating climate change, and strengthening our communities.
The House Committee on Education and Labor held a subcommittee hearing today on the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act. The PRO Act ends prohibitions on collective and class-action litigation, prohibits employers from permanently replacing striking employees, amends how employees are defined to ensure that no one is misclassified as an independent contractor, strengthens remedies and enforcement for employees who are exercising their rights, creates a mediation and arbitration process for new unions, protects against captive audience meetings, and streamlines the National Labor Relations Board’s procedures.
