Building Clean: Improving Efficiency, Health, and Equity in Housing and Creating Good Jobs

When buildings are designed, built, and maintained to protect the health of people and the environment—and if the manufacturing of building products and materials create good-paying union jobs in the U.S.—then the wellbeing of people and communities will improve, especially for people of color. Building Clean works to increase the use of building products that are more efficient, less toxic, and manufactured in the U.S. We aim to improve the physical, environmental, and economic health of communities and promote a more equitable future for all.

Solidarity for Climate Action: The Plan We Need to Get American Manufacturing Back on Track

Manufacturing towns dot the nation, and advanced manufacturing helps provide the foundation for the economy in major regions of the United States. Industries like the steel and automotive industries supported good-paying jobs, middle-class families, and prosperous communities for decades, while also spurring American leadership in innovation and technology. That’s still true in some areas. But in many others, factories have closed or new industries offer jobs that all too often are poorly paid, insecure, or unsafe.

New Research Finds Federal Clean Energy, Manufacturing, and Infrastructure Investments Will Support Three Million Jobs Per Year 

New analysis by the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst commissioned by the BlueGreen Alliance and National Skills Coalition estimates that the combined investments in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), Inflation Reduction Act, and CHIPS and Science Act (CHIPS) will support nearly 3 million jobs per year over the life span of the laws.

The package of announcements focuses on three U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) programs that provide grants and loans to automakers building clean vehicles and their components here in the United States, the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (ATVM) Loan Program, the Battery Material Processing and Battery Manufacturing and Recycling Grants Programs, and the new Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grant Program.

Benefits of Inflation Reduction Act Already Being Seen One Year In

One year ago today, President Joe Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act into law, putting the nation on a path to clean up the nation’s air and water and reduce greenhouse gas emissions up to 42% by 2030. Over the last year, the law has already begun to revitalize U.S. manufacturing, grow clean energy, and support and create good union jobs across the country.

The Inflation Reduction Act at One Year 

Last year, fueled by a desire to buck the status quo that has chipped away at workers’ health, safety, and rights for too long, the BlueGreen Alliance advocated tirelessly for a historic climate and jobs bill. We called for a bill based on the core tenet that the clean economy should work for working people, while protecting the environment and people’s health. It should also create good-paying, accessible jobs for all.

Just one year after being signed into law the Inflation Reduction Act is helping to build a clean economy that does all that. If it is implemented correctly and the jobs created are good, safe, union jobs for all workers.

The map highlights communities impacted by the decline of domestic industrial manufacturing, the energy transition, and disproportionate environmental, economic, and health burdens.
