BOEM Approves SouthCoast Wind Project

December 20, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. The U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) today announced the approval of the SouthCoast Wind Project. The final Environmental Impact Statement for the project was released on November 8, 2024, after BOEM gathered input from interested stakeholders.

The project will be located more than 20 miles off the shores of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, MA, with the potential capacity of 2.4 gigawatts (GW). This project could power over 800,000 homes in Massachusetts and Rhode Island and create thousands of good-paying jobs.

SouthCoast Wind is the 11th offshore wind project approved under the Biden-Harris administration creating the potential for 19 GW of clean, reliable power. A maximum of 141 turbine generators will be erected, along with up to five offshore substation platforms.

Following the announcement, the BlueGreen Alliance released a statement from Executive Director Jason Walsh:

“The SouthCoast Wind Project has the potential to create thousands of good jobs, deliver clean energy to New England, and build more resilient communities. We appreciate BOEM’s commitment to understanding how this project will impact our ports and eastern shores. These important findings will guide the project through development in the safest way possible.”
