BlueGreen Alliance Welcomes Introduction of U.S. Sen. Duckworth’s Marshall Plan for Coal Country Act
U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill) today introduced a bill aimed at supporting communities and workers impacted by the nation’s transition to cleaner cheaper fuels. The bill, entitled “the Marshall Plan for Coal Country Act,” will provide healthcare for coal workers, establish a plan to stabilize coal communities’ economies when a plant or mine closes, and provides access to free higher education to coal workers and their families.
In response to the introduction of the bill, the BlueGreen Alliance released the following statement from Executive Director Jason Walsh:
“As we build the clean energy economy of the future, we must ensure that no worker or community is left behind. Coal workers have sacrificed their health for generations to power our country. As we move to cleaner, cheaper energy sources we owe these workers the opportunity to help build a cleaner and more just and prosperous future for themselves and the communities they live in.”
