BlueGreen Alliance Urges Congress to Provide Aid to Flint in Government Spending Bill
BlueGreen Alliance statement urging Congress to include aid for Flint, Michigan, in the Continuing Resolution (CR), which is expected to be voted on by the Senate this week and must be passed by October 1 to avoid a government shutdown.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 27, 2016) Both chambers are expected to vote this week on a government spending deal, or Continuing Resolution (CR), which Congress must pass by October 1 to avoid a government shutdown. The following is a statement from BlueGreen Alliance Executive Director Kim Glas:
“It has been nearly a year since Flint was declared a state of emergency. Today, Flint’s water is still undrinkable without a filter, and generations of damage have been etched into the community as a result of the potential lifelong effects of lead poisoning.
“This week, Congress has the opportunity to do the right thing. While the Continuing Resolution currently under debate in the Senate rightly provides funding for flood victims in Louisiana, at this juncture, it does not provide critical aid for Flint.
“The House has already missed a significant opportunity to follow the Senate’s bipartisan lead in providing funding for Flint in the Water Resources Development Act on the floor this week. The same mistake should not be made with the Continuing Resolution.
“We implore Congress to provide Flint with these critical funds. This community waited long enough.”
