WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 4, 2011) “We Are One” kicks off today with more than 1,000 events across the country this week in support of workers’ rights. The BlueGreen Alliance released the following statement from Executive Director David Foster:
“Today, as we commemorate the anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King, Jr., and in the face of threats to the rights of working people – for which we have worked for so long and so hard, and for which Dr. King was working when he was struck down on this day 43 years ago – union members and environmentalists are joining together to deliver a simple message: we are one.
“This nation needs a jobs plan – one that revitalizes the middle-class, secures our energy future, protects the environment, and makes America the leader in the 21st century economy. But instead of providing a jobs plan that will move our country forward, some governors and legislatures across the country are weakening, and in some cases destroying, the most basic rights of workers – endangering our families, our communities, and our economy.
“Union members and environmentalists have and will continue to join together to reach our common vision: an economy that provides good jobs for working Americans and protects the environment for our children and our grandchildren. Today, the BlueGreen Alliance stands with union members to demand good, family supporting jobs that provide for our families, strengthen our communities, and make our economy prosper in the 21st century economy.
