LOS ANGELES, CA (November 3, 2010) After California voters defeated Proposition 23 on Election Day, the BlueGreen Alliance released the following statement from Executive Director David Foster:

“Yesterday’s decisive defeat of Proposition 23 is a clear victory for clean energy, not just in California but throughout the United States and around the world. California voters chose clean air and clean energy standards that will create jobs, improve public health and make California a leader in the race for clean energy jobs.

“The importance of the Proposition 23 vote cannot be overstated. For the first time, American voters directly considered the economic and environmental consequences of doing nothing about the growing risks of climate change. And they have answered unequivocally that ignoring these risks is unacceptable and that the job-creating potential of clean energy investments is the smartest path out of the current unemployment crisis.

“Now, as our nation continues to grapple with our energy challenges and a jobless recovery, America can look to California for a path to economic recovery that positions the United States as a global leader in clean energy and puts people back to work building an American clean energy infrastructure.

“The BlueGreen Alliance is especially proud of the coalition that was assembled to defeat Proposition 23 and the collaboration between labor, environmentalists, business leaders, and social justice advocates that promises to move California forward as a global leader in clean energy deployment.

“California voters yesterday sent a message to the rest of the country: choose jobs, choose economic prosperity, choose public health, and choose clean energy.”
